Official overview

The year is 2367, thirty two years after the Great War. Or at least what YOU thought was the Great War. The seemingly endless tide of Shivan capital ships, bombers and fighters with super advanced technology was nearly overwhelming.

As the Terran and Vasudan races finish rebuilding their decimated societies, a disturbance lurks in the not-so-far reaches of the Gamma Draconis system. Your nemesis has arrived... and they are wondering what happened to their scouting party...

The game continues on the story from Descent: FreeSpace, once again thrusting the player into the role of a pilot fighting against the mysterious aliens, the Shivans. While defending the human race and its alien Vasudan allies, the player also gets involved in putting down a rebellion of those elements of Vasudan (Hammer of Light) and Human (Neo Terran Front) forces which don't want to cooperate with one another.

Patches and modifications

Official patches

Unofficial patches

The Freespace 2 Source Code Project is regarded as the de facto way to play Freespace 2, following the engine source code release. FS2 Open adds extra features to Freespace 2, including support for high resolution textures and models, Ogg movie playback and extended mod support, giving rise to some of the most popular total conversions of the game.

To install FS2 Open on Windows, download the FS2 Open Installer. For best results, choose the option to install MediaVPs, too.

Modifications

A non-exhaustive list of FS2 Open compatible mods, including campaign sagas based on Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and Wing Commander.

Source ports

The FreeSpace Open Installer provides an easy way to install the FreeSpace Open source code port. This thread provids information on a manual installation.

Linux compatibility

To install Freespace 2 on Linux, run the installer using Wine, and copy all of the files, minus the executables to ~/.fs2open or /usr/share/games/fs2open. You will then need to install the FS2 Open project. Some distributions have packages for this, on other distributions you will need to run the FS2 Open installer.

Ubuntu

This thread has some details for Ubuntu 10.10, which may be useful on other distributions.

Arch

In Arch, an AUR package exists for FS2Open. This will compile and install a global binary (/usr/bin/fs2_open).
